Volleyball's Hampton To Represent USA At Pan American Games
Monday, July 9, 2007 | Volleyball
University of Florida senior outside hitter Marcie Hampton (Gainesville, Fla.) has been named to the U.S. Women's National Team roster for the XV Pan American Games, which will commence on July 13 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The volleyball competition segment is scheduled for July 14-19 at Maracanazinho Gymnasium.
Hampton's appointment to the Pan Am Games roster is her second in as many tournaments for the U.S. Women's National Team in 2007, as she and the squad recently returned from a fourth-place finish at the Pan American Cup in Colima, Mexico. The two-time All-Southeastern Conference selection played in five of Team USA's seven matches at the Pan Am Cup, recording 15 points on 11 kills, three aces and a block solo. Her efforts helped the U.S. qualify for the 2008 FIVB World Grand Prix after winning Pool A with a 5-0 record – the only team in the 12-country tournament to finish pool play with an undefeated record.
Hampton is one of six players on the Pan Am Games roster that also made the trip to Mexico for the Pan Am Cup.
The U.S. has been assigned to Group B, and will open play on July 14 with a 1 p.m. match against Costa Rica. The Americans will return to action the following day when they square off with Puerto Rico at 1 p.m., then conclude pool play on July 16 against Cuba at 7 p.m. Semifinals and classification matches will be played on July 18, with the championship match slated for July 19.
Occurring once every four years, and in the year prior to each Olympic Games, the Pan American Games is a multi-sport, quadrennial event for the Americas. The 2007 edition of the Pan Am Games will feature approximately 5,500 athletes from 42 countries. The American delegation will feature approximately 650 athletes competing in 35 sports.
ESPN Deportes is scheduled to televise Team USA's preliminary matches against Puerto Rico and Cuba as part of 160 hours of Pan Am Games-related programming over seven different ESPN platforms. For more information on ESPN's coverage of the Pan Am Games, please click here.
