Tuesday, August 21, 2007 | Men's Golf
Three players from the University of Florida finished their opening rounds of the 107th U.S. Amateur at The Olympic Club Tuesday morning. The round was suspended Monday night due to darkness.
Senior Manuel Villegas (Medillin, Colombia), junior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) and sophomore Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) joined 156 other competitors Tuesday morning to finish what they started on Monday.
Villegas started out shaky with a double-bogey to start the day, but fired three birdies and five pars to finish his first round with a 74 (+4). Horschel traded back-to-back birdies on No. 3 and 4 for two bogeys on No. 1 and 9 Tuesday morning for a 76 (+6) scorecard.
Alexander, looking to gain some strokes from his +8 performance in his first nine holes, opened with an eagle on the first hole, a 533 yard, par-5. Despite bogeys on No. 3 and 5, Alexander landed a birdie on the seventh for a first round total of 77 (+7).
UF sophomores Chappell Brown (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Andres Echavarria (Medillin, Columbia) managed to finish their first rounds Monday. Brown matched his seven pars with seven bogeys, plus three double-bogeys on No. 9, 14 and 17, shooting a 12-over 82 to start the week.
Echavarria fired a five-over 75 on his first day, despite two birdies in the round. After shooting even-par through eight holes, a triple-bogey on No. 9, followed by back-to-back bogeys on No. 10 and 11, dropped Echavarria into a hole to start the week.
The second round is tentatively scheduled to begin two hours later than originally planned Tuesday.
