The University of Florida women's golf team celebrated accomplishments and recognized individuals from the 2006-07 campaign as it held the annual team banquet Tuesday night in the F Club. The evening was hosted by head coach Jill Briles-Hinton and assistant coach Robin Walton and highlighted by guest speaker and UF Hall of Fame member Mary Hafeman.
Hafeman, the Director of Golf at LPGA International Golf Courses in Daytona Beach, Fla., addressed the team before the awards presentation. She is one of the top-50 female golf instructors in the nation and was a two-time team MVP as a Lady Gator.
Seniors recognized and awarded were Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.), Laura Erzisnisk (Coral Springs, Fla.), Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany), C.J. Kim (Rowland Heights, Calif.), Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) and Eleanor Tucker (Wilson, N.C.).
Gal was rewarded for her remarkable all-around junior season, taking home the Alice Upchurch Scholastic Achievement Award for the team's highest GPA, Most Inspirational Player honors, the Most Improved Player and was chosen as the team's Most Valuable Player for the second straight year. Gal was a NGCA first-team All-American, co-SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, broke the school record in scoring average and finished the year rated fifth in the nation in Golfweek's final individual rankings.
Junior Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) was awarded the Skills Challenge Champion Award, which the coaching staff selected after she compiled the highest total of points through a series of exercises and competitions used routinely by the Lady Gators during practice sessions.
The 15th-ranked Lady Gators will tee off the new season Sept. 14-16 at the Mason Rudolph hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
