Men's Golf's Horschel Wins Morning Foursome, Helps U.S. Win Walker Cup Trophy

University of Florida junior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) and the U.S. team captured its second straight Walker Cup Match trophy Sunday over the Great Britain and Ireland squad, 12 1/2 to 11 1/2 at Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Ireland. Horschel won his morning foursomes match, but fell in his afternoon singles session.
Horschel, paired with Oklahoma State freshman Rickie Fowler for the second-consecutive day, got off to a slow start against the Irish pairing of Rory McIlroy and Jonny Caldwell, staring at a four-hole deficit after five holes. The U.S. pair stole the momentum, winning seven of eight holes for a 3-up lead after 13 holes, closing out the match, 2 and 1, and sitting at 3-0 each going into the afternoon singles match.
Horschel's afternoon wouldn't go as planned, falling to McIlroy in a rematch of Saturday's singles match. McIlroy would avenge his loss from the first day, 4 and 2, with Horschel never owning the lead in the match.
