Wednesday's Women's Tennis Match vs. Stetson Postponed until Jan. 23
Wednesday, January 16, 2008 | Women's Tennis
Due to weather conditions in the Gainesville area, the University of Florida women's tennis match against Stetson scheduled for Wednesday, January 16 has been postponed.
The match has been rescheduled and will be played on Wednesday, January 23rd beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
The contest between the fourth-ranked Gators and the Hatters remains Florida's season-opener, but creates a very hectic opening slate, as the team also will play host to UCF on Thur., January 24 and South Alabama on Sat., January 26th.
The Gators, who enter their 36th season of varsity competition, sport an impressive 32-3 all-time record in season-openers. Since a 7-2 loss to Miami on February 1, 1985, Florida has won 22 consecutive opening day matches.
Florida also sports a 175-32 record versus in-state foes, having reeled off 17 straight wins against other teams from the Sunshine State. The Gators are 5-0 all-time against Stetson, including last year's 7-0 shutout.
Entering the 2007-08 season, Florida has won 42 consecutive home matches since a 4-3 loss to Miami on May 15, 2004. That run is the second longest overall home win streak in program history. The Gators regular-season home win streak stands at 56 in a row, also the second longest run in this category. Florida's last regular-season setback was a 4-3 decision to then-No. 2 Georgia on April 7, 2002, the only time the Gators have lost to a Southeastern Conference team at the Ring Tennis Complex.
Florida returns six letterwinners from last year's teams that compiled a 24-3 overall record and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships. Those six, which includes singles All-Americans Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas), Csilla Borsanyi (Hungary) and Diana Srebrovic (Oakville, Ontario), welcome two extremely talented rookies to the team. Marrit Boonstra (The Netherlands) and Julia Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) are expected to make an immediate impact and add substantial depth to the Gator lineup this season.
