Men's Basketball Falls on the Road at No. 18 Ole Miss, 89-87
Thursday, January 17, 2008 | Men's Basketball
The Rebels (15-1, 2-1 SEC) ended a six-game skid against Florida (15-3, 2-1 SEC) dating back to 2002.
Calathes nailed a three-pointer to cut the Gators' deficit to two in the waning seconds of the second half but Ole Miss' Dwayne Curtis hit a pair of free throws to seal the win. Florida chipped away at a double-digit Ole Miss lead for most of the game and had to fight to overcome a 19-5 Rebels' run midway through the second half.
Trailing by nine heading into the half, the Gators outscored the Rebels in the second half, 53-46. Florida ended the first-half on an 8-2 run capped on a layup by freshman guard Jai Lucas (Houston, Texas) to cut into a double-digit lead.
Werner poured in 13 first-half points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Freshman forward Chandler Parsons (Winter Park, Fla.) added 15 points on 5-of-11 from the field.
Junior guard Walter Hodge (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) was the fourth Gator to register double-digits, finishing with 13 points.
The Gators had uncharacteristic troubles at the free throw line and after making three of their first four three-point attempts, went on to hit just six-of-29 long distance tries.
Curtis and Trevor Gaskins combined to hit 14-of-18 shots from the floor and combined for 37 points to pace the Rebels' offensive attack.
Next on the conference schedule is a showdown with Kentucky televised on ESPN at 9 p.m. on Saturday. ESPN College Gameday will make its second ever appearance in Gainesville.
