W-Tennis: Boonstra's Run at Riviera/ITA All-American Ends in Round of 16
Thursday, October 2, 2008 | Women's Tennis
University of Florida sophomore Marrit Boonstra (pronounced MARE-it) played more than six and a half hours of intense tennis on Tuesday and it caught up with her on Wednesday, when she dropped her round of 16 singles match at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
Boonstra needed to win just one more match in the qualifying event to earn a place in the main draw of the prestigious national touranment held at the Riviera Tennis Club. The Gator sophomore, however, couldn't recover from the long day played in 95-plus degree temperatures and lost to Furman's Laura Gioia, 6-1, 6-1.
“Marrit had a tough time finding her legs after such a long, grueling day on Tuesday and she just didn't have her best stuff today,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “Gioia played really well and the credit goes to her.”
Boonstra returns to the court again on Thursday, when she a Gator junior Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas) begin play in the main draw of the 16-team doubles field. The Florida duo earned an automatic berth into the main draw based on their No. 6 national ranking.
Anastasia Revzina (Russia) also was in action on Wednesday, but fell to California's Bojana Bobusic, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 16 in the Qualifying consolation singles draw.
“Anastasia had her chances, but just couldn't find a way to put points together,” Balogh said. “That's one thing all of our players learned from this tournament. It's uncharacteristic of us and we tend to be much better later in the season, but against the caliber of players who are in this tournament, you can't give up consecutive points often and that's what happened. We will be better, I have no doubt about it. One area that never faltered, though, was our competitiveness. I was extremely proud of the way we continued to fight.”
