Erica LaGrow, an assistant coach with the University of Florida lacrosse program, is part of the U.S. training team for the 2009 Women's World Cup, which will be held June 17-27 in Prague, Czech Republic.
The 24-member U.S. training team was selected from a 48-player pool that competed at the US Lacrosse Stars & Stripes Weekend in Syracuse, N.Y., on Oct. 11-12.
The training team will hold a practice weekend in December and will compete along with the remaining 24 players from the player pool during the US Lacrosse Champions Challenge in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., from Jan. 30 - Feb. 1. The final 18 players for the World Cup and six alternates will be selected following that event.
LaGrow joined the Gator coaching staff in August. She completed her collegiate career at the University of North Carolina last spring. As a senior, LaGrow racked up 24 goals and was named second-team All-South Regional for the second time in her career. The four-year starter was named to the first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference team as a senior and the conference honor roll every year. The midfielder also earned All-ACC Academic honors twice.
She ended her collegiate career with 80 goals and 15 assists for 95 points. She also picked up 90 ground balls and controlled 84 draws. LaGrow helped the Tar Heels to the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals four consecutive years.
LaGrow gained international playing experience with the U.S. Women's Elite team in 2007 and 2008, and was a member of the touring team, which captured the championship of the 2008 Prague Cup in June.
UF's other assistant coach, Jenny Ulehla, is an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team. She will be with the 2009 Women's World Cup next June in Prague. She and UF Head Coach Amanda O'Leary were part of the 1993 U.S. team that won the World Cup. O'Leary was also part of U.S.'s 1989 World Cup championship team.
The first Gator lacrosse team starts play in the spring of 2010.
