The University of Florida's Lindsay Thompson (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch H.S.) is the Southeastern Conference Offensive and Freshman Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Since the SEC began naming a SEC Freshman of the Week in 2005, Thompson is the first Gator to win both honors in a single week.
These are the first such honors for Thompson and she is the first Gator to be named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week this season. Three different Gators have been named the SEC Freshman of the Week this season, as Thompson joins previous UF recipients Tahnai Annis (Aug. 25 and Sept. 8) and Sarah Chapman (Sept. 15).
The SEC Defensive Player of the Week is a center back for Florida's opponent Friday - Danielle Johnson of Mississippi.
Thompson scored goals in both of Florida's overtime road wins last weekend. The first game-winning goal of her collegiate career was golden in Sunday's 3-2 2OT match at Kentucky. She one-touched a 15-yard shot in at the near post in the 103rd minute to give UF the win in Lexington, Ky. In Friday's 4-3 OT win at Vanderbilt, Thompson put in the rebound off a corner kick shot to tie the match at 2-all in the opening half.
She has now scored a goal in each of Florida's last three matches. Thompson shares third among the Gators with four goals this season and is fourth with 10 points.
Next up, Florida meets its first Southeastern Conference Western Division rival of the season when Mississippi comes to town on Friday, Oct. 10. Match time is set for 8 p.m. (ET) at the James G. Pressly Stadium. Friday's match will feature the top two teams in the current SEC standings, as Florida leads with a 4-0 league record and UM is second at 3-1. Senior Jennifer Hance leads UM this season with 11 points off of five goals and an assist. The Rebels opened SEC play with a 2-0 loss to Arkansas, but since then has posted three consecutive victories. UM handed then No. 24 LSU its first loss (1-0) of the season on Sept. 28 and collected two road wins last weekend - Auburn (3-1) and Alabama (2-1).
