The University of Florida men's golf team has signed three players rated in the top 25 of the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings, head coach Buddy Alexander announced on Friday. Phillip Choi, Tyler McCumber and Tommy Chung Hao Mou each signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Gators beginning in the fall of 2009.
“I think this is a terrific class and we're lucky to have three guys of this caliber,” said Coach Alexander. “My expectations for this group are that they help us be very successful in the near future and I'm hoping that all three can be significant contributors next year as freshman.”
Choi is the third-rated player in the current Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings. He has four top-10 finishes in the 2008 junior season, including a runner-up finish at the 2008 Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic. The second-team AJGA All-American finished in a fourth-place tie at the 2008 FootJoy Invitational. He is also a two-time medalist in the 1-A state championship playing for Circle Christian School in Orlando. Choi was also named to the 2008 Canon Cup team.
McCumber, the cousin of former Gator Josh McCumber and son of PGA Tour-winner Mark McCumber, is also a second-team AJGA All-American. He is currently 18th in the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings and had a runner-up finish at the 2008 Western Junior. He also had top-10 finishes at the Westfield Junior PGA Championship (T8th) and Scott Robertson Memorial (T9th) during the 2008 junior season. McCumber attends Nease High School in Ponte Vedra.
Mou attends the Pendleton School in Bradenton. He enjoyed a terrific 2007 season that included five top-10 finishes in AJGA Major Tournaments. He had a top-five finish at the Verizon Junior Heritage in February before suffering an injury that held him back during the summer. He is currently rated 21st in the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings.
