Thursday, November 20, 2008 | Football
Several members of the military will be recognized prior to the University of Florida's football game versus The Citadel on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Included among the group will be a member of the Wounded Warrior Project, Charles Crews, who served in Somalia and Iraq and was a Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps.
Four other local soldiers will participate in the coin toss and be recognized at a timeout in the first half. This group includes: Captain Oscar Rodriguez (3RD Inf. Div., May 07 - Sept. 08, Baghdad, Iraq), SGT David West (3RD Inf Div., Jan. 07 - May 08, Ramadi, Iraq), SGT Michael Rolley (2ND BSTB, 10th Mountain Div., Aug. 06 - Oct. 07, Camp Stryker, Baghdad, Iraq) and SSG Jason Riney (1/5 Field Artillery, 1st Inf. Div., Sept. 04 - Sept. 05, Ramadi, Iraq).
More than 30,000 troops have been wounded in the on-going war on terror, many of them suffering traumatic brain injuries, amputations and severe burns. The Wounded Warrior Project is an organization whose mission is to honor and empower these wounded warriors and make this the most successful, well-adjusted generation of veterans in our nation's history. The Wounded Warrior Project provides services and programs including adaptive sports opportunities and benefits and career counseling to ease the burdens of the wounded and their families, aid in the recovery process and smooth their transition back into civilian life.
