Friday, November 21, 2008 | Men's Basketball
The Florida Gators men's basketball team defeated Southern Utah, 64-50, on Thursday night despite connecting on only one-of-16 from behind the arc. Florida was led by sophomore guard Nick Calathes (Casselberry, Fla.), who was the only Gator to score in double figures.
Calathes collected 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists, leading the team in all three categories. Junior forward Dan Werner (Middletown, N.J.) added nine points and three rebounds. Werner connected on the only three-pointer for the Gators with 22.1 seconds to play in the game.
Poor shooting from the outside forced the Gators to go to work inside and totaled 38 points in the paint. Sophomore forward Alex Tyus (St. Louis, Mo.) had eight points on four-of-five shooting and added six rebounds. Freshman forward/center Kenny Kadji (Douala, Cameroon) led all freshman scorers with nine points and two rebounds.
Forward Davis Baker led the Thunderbirds with 23 points and eight rebounds.
The Gators travel to Kansas City, Mo. to face Syracuse on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The game, which is the semifinals of the O'Reilly Autoparts CBE Classic, will air on ESPN2.
