Sha Brooks Named SEC Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Monday, November 24, 2008 | Women's Basketball
Fresh off her game-high 24-point performance on Sunday when she helped the University of Florida women's basketball team upset No. 22/21 Florida State, Gator senior Sha Brooks (Jackson, Tenn.) was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
This is the first time in her career Brooks has been honored with the SEC's weekly award. She was, however, recognized four times as the Freshman of the Week during the 2005-06 season.
Brooks scored 18 of her season-high points during the second half of Florida's victory against the Seminoles in Tallahassee, the first time the Gators have toppled a top-25 ranked team since Feb. 26, 2006, when UF defeated then-No. 5 Tennessee in Knoxville, 95-93 in overtime.
Florida won three games last week, when Brooks was the game's leading scorer in two of those, also netting 16 points in the 74-51 win against Jacksonville on Nov. 17.
The 5-foot-8 guard totaled 44 points during the three-game run thanks to steady shooting from the field (45.2%, 14-of-31) and the free throw line (84.2%, 16-of-19).
Brooks and the Gators (3-1) play host to Savannah State tonight at 7 p.m., approximately 27 hours after the final horn sounded from Florida's win over Florida State.
