The University of Florida's Ndidi Madu (pronounced De-De MAH-due) was named the Southeastern Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Madu, a 6-foot-3 redshirt freshman from Antoich, Tenn., entered the week averaging 4.0 points and 3.3 rebounds while playing 8.7 minutes. Last week, she improved in each of those statistical categories and others, helping the 23rd-ranked Gators (10-1) extend their winning streak to 10 games, the third-longest stretch in program history.
She tallied eight points, the second-most of her career, versus the Rattlers on Dec. 12, helping the Gators outscore FAMU, 36-18 in the paint; her eight points also helped UF win the bench scoring, 35-12. Her two blocks against Florida A&M was a career-high and doubled her total entering the week.
The commanding victories helped UF defeat each of its first five home opponents by 20 or more points for the first time in program history
With the two home wins last week, the Gators extended their home win streak versus non-conference opponents to 13 in a row
Florida, which is taking a nine-day break between games because of final exams, next plays host No. 16 Pittsburgh on Sunday, Dec. 21 in the O'Connell Center beginning at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on Sun Sports and on Fox College Sports state-wide, while the radio broadcast of the game can be heard in Gainesville on WRUF-AM850 and through the internet at www.GatorZone.com, the official website of the Florida Gators.
