Michigan Takes Three-Shot Lead After Day 2 Of Gainesville Shootout
Friday, March 14, 2008 | Women's Golf
The University of Michigan women's golf team climbed three spots to first place at the Gainesville Shootout behind a round of 302 on Friday at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Cold and rainy conditions put a damper on scoring conditions for nearly every player. The Wolverines 36-hole total of 611 is three shots better than Texas State, who is second at 614 heading into the final day of play. Illinois is third at 615 and Illinois State is in fourth at 617.
The University of Florida women's golf team has only been playing individuals in the competition. First-round leader redshirt freshman Nicole Schachner (Libertyville , Ill.) carded a 7-over 77 on Friday to drop to third place. Schachner is at 7-over overall and seven shots back of the leader, Alex Rankin of Wofford.
“Patience is the key in conditions like this,” Schachner said. “Once it gets wet, you have to use longer clubs into par-4s and that makes it tough. I thought I putted well and felt confident because my iron play was shaky today.”
Despite the damp conditions, Rankin blistered the course with a 2-under 68 and sits at even par overall. The 68 is the only round in red figures through 36 holes. Rankin posted a 2-over 72 on Thursday. Illinois' Raquel Hopton is in second at 5-over.
Senior Eleanor Tucker (Wilson, N.C.) posted a 6-over 70 and is tied for seventh at 11-over through two rounds. Junior C.J. Kim (Rowland Heights, Calif.) had the low UF round of the day with a 5-over 75 that left her at 16-over and a three-way tie for 26th place.
Saturday's final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET. Schachner and Tucker will tee off on hole No. 1 while Kim's round begins at hole No. 2. Admission is free to the public.
