T&F's Williams Posts Season-Best Mark At Virginia Tech Last Chance
Saturday, March 8, 2008 | Track and Field
University of Florida senior Shawneise Williams (Archer, Fla.) fired a season-best 20.17m/66-2.25 in the women's weight throw on Saturday at the Virginia Tech Last Chance, moving into the top-15 nationally and making a strong bid for an invitation to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Williams, who achieved the mark on her first attempt, finished third in the competition, and stood in a tie for 13th on the NCAA descending order list when the action concluded. Sixteen athletes gained entrance to the national meet in 2007, with the distance cutoff falling at 20.13m/66-0.50.
The performance came a day after freshman Liene Karsuma (Riga, Latvia) took advantage of a last-chance opportunity in the women's high jump with an automatic-qualifying mark of 1.85m/6-0.75 – a leap that also tied the UF record – at the Arkansas Last Chance Qualifier in Fayetteville. Junior Willie Perry (Lenoir, N.C.) also had a productive trip to the Arkansas campus, finishing the men's 200m with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 21.05 that moved him into position for a berth in the NCAA meet.
The Gators will now wait to finalize their squad for the NCAA Indoor Championships before heading back to Fayetteville for the competition, which is slated to take place from March 14-15 at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
