Morrison On Pace To Break School Decathlon Record At Mt. SAC Relays

Sophomore Mike Morrison (Chesapeake, Va.) set three personal bests on Wednesday en route to piling up a career-best first-day total of 4,021 points at the multi-events portion of the Mt. SAC Relays, while senior Kurt Lee (Spring Hill, Fla.) stands in eighth with a day-one PR of 3,478 after turning in a pair of personal bests.
Morrison is currently second in school history in the decathlon with a total of 7,316 points, which he obtained at the 2007 SEC Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He tallied 3,857 points on the first day of that competition.
Morrison opened the day with a fourth-place finish in the 100m, earning 830 points with a time of 11.14 against a -1.3 headwind. Sophomore Steffan Hommel (Albershausen, Germany) took fifth in the event with a time of 11.24, collecting 808 points, while Lee finished in a tie for ninth with a mark of 11.43, which was good for 767 points.
The competition then moved on to the long jump, where Morrison notched a personal-best and NCAA regional-qualifying mark of 7.40m/24-3.50 en route to earning runner-up honors in the event and picking up 910 points. Hommel finished fifth in the stage with an effort of 7.02m/23-0.50, and Lee checked in at 6.57m/21-6.75 to take 10th in the event.
Hommel made a move in the next event as the decathlon moved to the shot put, wining the event with a heave of 14.72m/48-3.50, gathering 772 points in the process. Lee finished fourth with a career-best toss of 13.22m/43-4.50, and Morrison followed with an output of 12.57m/41-3 to finish seventh and grab 641 points.
Both Morrison and Lee notched another PR in the high jump, as Morrison led the way with a leap of 2.00m/6-6.75 to take second in the competition and earn 803 points. Lee cleared a bar of 1.76m/5-9.25 to contribute 593 points to his total, while Hommel did not successfully negotiate a height.
Morrison finished the day with a career-best time of 49.51 in the 400m to take fourth and add 837 points to his total, while Lee picked up 724 points with a time of 52.01 and Hommel recorded 703 points with a mark of 52.49.
