Gator Coaching Staff Supports Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund
Saturday, April 19, 2008 | Women's Basketball
Among the different activities the Gator coaching staff participated in at the 2008 Final Four was the very first national event to benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund hosted by the NCAA.
The 4Kay Run Presented by The Hartford was held on Super Saturday, April 5, during the 2008 Women's Final Four and the WBCA National Convention in Tampa, Florida.
Much to the chagrin of the other members of the staff, Assistant Coach Susie Gardner came ready to run in her 70's style headband and wristband. A second goal was immediately established – distance themselves from any future fashion statements Coach Gardner planned to assume.
Assistant Coach David Lowery did his best to shake as many hands and have has many in-depth conversations with participants and spectators as he could during his run/walk effort.
Head Coach Amanda Butler, worried that Lowery would be the last person to complete the entire race – something she insisted no one on her staff would do –ran/walked with Coach Lowery to make sure he wouldn't stop too long at any one place to socialize and crossed the tape with Lowery.
As expected, Assistant Coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick's competitive side came through. Thankfully she did not trample any of the other participants racing to the front of the pack, as the other Gator staff members were fearful she might.
Caught-up in the adrenaline of the racing environment was Assistant to the Head Coach Janna Magette, who sprinted the final yards and finished just behind Kirkpatrick and second among Gator staffers – but she might have seen Coach Gardner closing in and wanted to separate herself from Gardner's fashion statement.
The goals for Video Coordinator Edwina Johnson were simple: don't finish last … and finish! She accomplished both!
