Softball's Nelson Earns Academic All-District Honors

University of Florida junior pitcher Stacey Nelson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) has been voted onto the 2008 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District III team. Nelson will now be eligible for CoSIDA's Academic All-America honor.
Nelson, the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year is a philosophy major with a 3.61 grade point average.
Nelson, who was recently named to the USA Softball Top 10 Finalists list, owns a 38-2 record on the season with five saves. Her 38 wins on the season is a new school record and her five saves tie her own school record. She has a 0.80 ERA and has struck out a school record 289 batters in 261.0 innings. Only 22 of the 143 hits she has given up this season have been for extra bases, and only one a home run. She is holding opponents to a .160 batting average.
Nelson joins 10 previous Gators who have earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors 13 times. Three of those, Beth Dieter, Jenny Gladding and Kristen Sandler, moved on to be named Academic All-Americans.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District teams are voted on by Sports Information Directors in the district which is made up of universities in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for her career. No athlete is eligible until she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution. The Academic All-America teams will be announced on May 28.
