Nine members of the University of Florida men's golf team earned SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition as announced by the league on Tuesday. The golfers were among a total of 93 student-athletes to earn spring semester honors.
Senior Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) made his fourth consecutive appearance on the honor roll. Villegas was named to the All-SEC second team and garnered PING All-America honorable mention honors for the first time in his career.
Fellow senior Tyler Brown (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned the honor for the second time in his career. Juniors Toby Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.) each made an appearance on the honor roll. Sophomores Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.), Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) and Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) were all honored by the league after being named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll last season. Sophomores Chappell Brown (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Robbie Wight (Palm Beach, Fla.) received the league accolade for the first time in their careers.
To be recognized on the SEC Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a grade point average of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above.
For the 2007-08 academic year, a total of 187 UF student-athletes earned a spot on the league's academic honor roll. That number matches UF's second-highest figure turned in last season. Florida's 187 selections are second only to South Carolina's 200 for the 2007-08 academic year.
