Lochte Finishes 400 IM Under World Record Time At U.S. Olympic Trials
Monday, June 30, 2008 | Men's Swimming & Diving
Former Gator Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) raced his way to a second-place finish in the finals event of the 400-meter IM (4:06.08) on the opening night of the U.S. Olympic Trials at the Qwest Center in Omaha Sunday.
Lochte recorded the fastest 400 IM time in semi-finals of the event (4:13.38), but finished second in an exciting finals swim to 2004 U.S. Olympic teammate Michael Phelps, who shattered his own World Record clocking in at 4:05.25. Both Phelps and Lochte swam under previous world record time (4:06.22), and with only two spots available on the U.S. Olympic team in the 400 IM, Phelps and Lochte will head to Beijing.
Lochte was not the only UF swimmer to turn in a stellar swim in the 400 IM finals as 2008 senior Dustin McLarty (DeLand, Fla.) recorded a career-best time clocking in at 4:18.90, good for sixth place, while soon-to-be junior Clark Burckle (Louisville, Ky.) placed seventh, tapping in at 4:19.24, also a career-best mark.
In other day one action, Tobias Work (Falmouth, Mass.) turned in a time of 3:52.28 in the 400-meter freestyle finals, tallying a total of four UF swimmers that qualified for the eight-man final of their respective events.
