Wednesday, July 9, 2008 | Men's Golf
Seniors Tyler Brown (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) each added another postseason honor on Thursday when they were named Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Brown finished a solid year for the Gators picking up four postseason honors. Previously he was named a second-team All-Southeastern Conference performer as well as being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for the second time in his career. He was also named to the SEC Men's Golf Community Service team for his efforts in giving back to the Gainesville community.
This was the fifth postseason honor for Villegas, who was the only Gator to play in every tournament last season. Villegas joined Brown as a second-team All-SEC performer and also earned Honorable Mention All-American honors from both PING and Golfweek. He was also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for the fourth consecutive season.
A total of 96 players earned the honor in Division I. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
