Horschel Advances in 2008 U.S. Amateur

Senior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) advanced through the first round of match play at the 2008 U.S. Amateur by defeating Drew Lethem 3 and 2 on Wednesday at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.
Horschel never trailed in defeating Lethem, 22, who plays collegiately at Georgia Southern. Horschel won the first hole with a par and never looked back. He went two up with a birdie on the third hole, but Lethem managed to even the match by winning the seventh and eighth holes.
Horschel answered by winning the ninth hole, and pushed his lead to three holes with pars on No. 13 and 15. The match ended when the two players halved the 16th hole.
Play continues Thursday with the second and third rounds of match play. The championship runs through the end of the week, with the 36-hole final match scheduled for Sunday. You can follow the tournament live online HERE.
The Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
