UF WBB Seniors to help with Inaugural Gators Canned Goods Challenge for Kids
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 | Women's Basketball
The University of Florida will kick off The Inaugural Gators Canned Goods Challenge for Kids at the first home football game on Saturday, Aug. 30, with women's basketball seniors Kim Critton, Aneika Henry, Marshae Dotson and Sha Brooks volunteering their time to help.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is sponsoring the season-long canned food drive to benefit the Bread of the Mighty Food Bank in Gainesville.
Fans are encouraged to bring as many canned goods as possible to every home game. The drop-off location is the Alltel Wireless FanFest located outside of Gate 2 of the Stephen C. O'Connell Center, which opens three hours prior to kickoff. SAAC representatives will be present at every game to help with the collection process.
Florida's goal is to break the world record for most food collected in a single day to help hungry children in the community. Collections will be distributed to over 150 local organizations.
Each home game the Gators will announce how many pounds of food were collected the game before and the total weight to date.
The Southeastern Conference will hold the second SEC Together we CAN Drive the week of Sept. 19-28, coinciding with the Gators' home game against Mississippi on Sept. 27. Every SEC school will participate in the league-wide food and donation drive to support food banks in the schools' local area. Last year, the Together we CAN Drive raised over 40,000 pounds of food and donations which benefited local food banks and shelters.
The Bread of the Mighty Food Bank encourages people to bring canned fruits, vegetables and meats. Please do not donate glass containers.
The 2007-08 Gator women's basketball team won the UAA Life Skills Cup for their commitment to helping others on campus and in the Gainesville community. This award is presented annually to the Gator team that excels the most in the five areas of the CHAMPS Life Skills program. Teams earn points for participating in any Life Skills programming including but not limited to: SAAC, Goodwill Gators (community outreach), workshops and presentations.
