Florida's Megan Kerns Earns Spot on SoccerBuzz.com Elite Team of the Week
Tuesday, September 30, 2008 | Soccer
Senior Megan Kerns (Ames, Iowa/Ames H.S.) is part of the SoccerBuzz.com Elite Team of the Week, the outlet announced Tuesday morning. She is the second Gator senior to receive national team of the week honors following UF's pair of wins last weekend to open Southeastern Conference play. Ameera Abdullah was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com national team of the week on Monday.
This is the first appearance on the SoccerBuzz.com Elite Team of the Week for Kerns and she is second Gator to appear on the team in 2008, joining goalkeeper Katie Fraine who was part of the Sept. 8 list.
Kerns provided both of Florida's goals in the 2-1 OT win over Georgia on Sept. 26. Her first came off the assist from freshman Jazmyne Avant in the 62nd minute. The Gators recorded its second overtime victory of the 2008 season when Kerns brought the ball down the center of the field and slide it ahead for freshman Lindsay Thompson. She ran the ball down a couple of steps into the box but UGA's goalkeeper came off her line to make the stop. Thompson's shot deflected off of the goalkeeper back to Kerns', who put the 20-yard right-footed volley into the empty net at 94:06. It was the first golden goal of Kerns' collegiate career.
Kerns also provided an assist on Florida's final goal by freshman Laura Ray in the 5-1 win over Tennessee on Sept. 28.
