The No 1/1 University of Florida softball team is hosting “Gator Softball Swinging for Cancer” on Sunday, Feb. 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. The Gators hope to raise money for Shands UF Cancer Hospital as they kick off the 2009 season.
Admission is free and fans are invited to mingle with softball players and other student-athletes. The first 500 fans will receive a 2009 Gator Softball schedule tee shirt. Magic Mike will be on hand, as well as the UF cheerleaders and mascots Albert and Alberta. KISS 105.3 will be on site as fans will have the chance to win prizes. The Gators will also be putting on a mini-skills clinic for children 12 and under. Shands will be there to accept pledges (no cash please).
At 3 p.m., Florida student-athletes and coaches will compete against each other in a hitting contest as the 2008 Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year Stacey Nelson delivers the ball. Each competitor will get five pitches from the All-American. A point system will be in place to crown a winner. Fans can enjoy the show as Gators try their luck against Nelson.
An autograph session caps off the fun-filled day from 3:30 to 4 p.m.
The Gators start the 2009 season against Baylor on Friday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. UF hosts its first season opener at home since 2004.
