Gator Shaune Fraser Named National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week

University of Florida swimmers Shaune Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands) and Shara Stafford (Topeka, Kan.) were named CollegeSwimming.com's Division I National Collegiate Swimmers of the Week for their respective performances against Virginia in the season opener Oct. 9 in Charlottesville.
The Gator swimming and diving squads combined to win 20 of the 32 events in the first dual meet of the 2009-10 campaign against the Cavaliers, moving to 1-0 on the young season. Wins on both the men's and women's sides allowed the Gators to maintain an undefeated record against the Cavaliers (8-0).
Stafford had two wins in the women's 166.5-131.5 dual meet victory over Virginia, after swimming victories in the 100 freestyle (49.70-NCAA "B" time) and the 200 freestyle (1:48.34-NCAA "B" time). The sophomore also assisted on the winning 200 medley relay (1:41.50) and the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:22.15).
Fraser had three individual victories in the 159-141 win over UVA. Fraser won the 100 butterfly (48.12- NCAA "B" time), 200 butterfly (1:45.93- NCAA "B" cut), and the 200 individual medley (1:49.92). The senior NCAA record holder and All-American also assisted on the winning 200 medley relay (1:31.53).

The Gators will continue fall training until parting ways Oct. 23-24. The Florida men's team will match up with Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 23, and the women split for the Dallas Women's Classic in Dallas, Texas, Oct. 23-24, and a triangular with Arkansas and Kansas in Fayetteville, Ark., Oct. 24.
