Men's Swimming & Diving Set to Duel With Georgia Tech Friday
Thursday, October 22, 2009 | Men's Swimming & Diving
Led by last week's National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week, senior Shaune Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands), the Florida men's swimming and diving team will head north to Atlanta, Ga., Friday for a dual meet match-up with the men of Georgia Tech from the ACC. Meet time is slated for 6 p.m. from the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
The dual with Georgia Tech will mark Florida's second consecutive match-up with an ACC opponent this season, after UF opened the 2009-10 slate 1-0, defeating the 2009 ACC Champion Virginia Cavaliers, 159-141, in Charlottesville.
“This is our second ACC opponent of the season,” Associate Head Coach Anthony Nesty said of the trip to compete against Georgia Tech. “It will be a good chance to see everyone compete in a different environment. We have a very versatile team, so we'd like to see some of our guys swim some different events. This will be a good gauge of where we are and where we need to be. Georgia Tech has a pretty good squad of IMers and some really good sprinters. Overall, their strengths are the sprint and IM events – they're a top 15 NCAA team.”
Florida owns a 24-10 all-time record over Yellow Jackets, but the Gators have not matched up for a dual with the Ramblin Wreck since 1966 when UF defeated Georgia Tech, 61-33. The Gators last competed against the men of Georgia Tech during the 2004-05 season at the Georgia Tech Invitational, where UF took first in Atlanta.
Both NCAA-caliber teams, the Gators placed fifth at the 2009 NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas, while Georgia Tech took home 19th place. Georgia Tech comes into Friday's meet posting a 3-1 overall record. In their last event, the Yellow Jackets swept Western Kentucky (164-136) and ACC foe Clemson (165-135).
The meet will be a 16-event format. Gator fans can follow action live from the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center here.
