The University of Florida lacrosse team started their fall season off with a bang on Saturday, scoring a combined 49 goals in two games against Jacksonville University and Rollins College. The Gators took down the Dolphins in the first game 22-4, and followed up with a 27-6 victory over the Tars.
In the first match at the Florida Lacrosse Facility, two first-year programs met on the field, with Florida taking control early on against Jacksonville. Freshman Sam Ferrell (Millersville, Md.) found the back of the net on a pass from fellow freshman Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) for the Gators first goal. UF built up a 10-1 lead with 9:17 to go in the first half when sophomore Caroline Cochran (Annapolis, Md.) scored off an assist from sophomore Rachael Zimmerman (Englewood, Colo.).
Zimmerman would turn out to be the star of game one with seven points on five goals and two assists, while freshman Janine Hillier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) added four goals. Freshman Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.) also had four points on three goals and an assist while Dashiell had four points on one goal and three assists.
In game two against Rollins, it was much of the same as the Gators opened up a 9-1 advantage on freshman Ashley Bruns (Ellicott City, Md.) goal with 12:33 remaining in the first half. UF outshot the Tars 53-9, with 40 shots on goal. Freshman Cori Gary (White Hall, Md.) was dominant scoring and passing, totaling 12 points with five goals and seven assists against Rollins. Bruns and freshman Colby Rhea (Abington, Md.) each scored five goals, while freshman Julie Schindel (Edgewater, Md.) tallied four points on three goals and one assist. Zimmerman had two goals and two assists to total 11 points on the day.
Freshman goalkeeper Cara Canington (Bel Air, Md.) earned the win in both matches, collecting six saves in the two games.
Florida will take next weekend off before traveling north for the prestigious Princeton Fall Tournament on Oct. 17. They will play five 30-minute running clock games against five of the NCAA Quarterfinalists from 2009, including NCAA runner-up North Carolina and five-time defending national champion Northwestern. The Gators will also play Syracuse, Penn and Princeton.
