Florida Faces Oregon State in NCAA Second Round Action

The University of Florida soccer team (16-5-2, 8-1-2 SEC) meets Oregon State (13-7-1, 4-5 Pac 10) in NCAA Championship Second Round action on Sunday, Nov. 15. Match time is set for 1 p.m. (ET) at The Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The winner of Sunday's match will face the winner of Sunday's Notre Dame-Central Michigan match in NCAA Round of 16 action, which will take place Nov. 20, 21 or 22. NCAA Quarterfinal action is the following weekend (Nov. 27, 28 or 29). The NCAA College Cup is set for Dec. 4 and 6 at the Aggie Soccer Stadium in College Station, Texas. Sunday's meeting will be the first between Florida and Oregon State. The Gators are a No. 3 regional seed for the 2009 tournament.
Florida claimed its fourth consecutive and 10th overall Southeastern Conference title, but was eliminated in the SEC Tournament semifinal round with a 1-0 loss to South Carolina. The Gamecocks went on to claim the SEC Tournament title and the league's automatic NCAA berth by defeating LSU in penalty kicks. Florida advanced to its 13th NCAA Championship by claiming one of the tournament's 34 at-large berths. Florida placed three on the 2009 All-SEC team – senior Lauren Hyde (SEC Defensive Player of the Year, SEC first team, junior Katie Fraine (SEC first team) and sophomore Lindsay Thompson (SEC second team).
The Gators used two second-half goals to take a 2-0 win over Illinois State to advance to the NCAA Second Round. Sophomore Tahnai Annis scored the first, pleasing the large contingent of family and friends that made the 55-mile trip west from Zanesville, Ohio, to see her play in a Gator uniform. Redshirt freshman McKenzie Barney scored the second goal. She is now second among the Gators with eight goals and 18 points.
Oregon State tied for sixth in the powerful Pacific 10 Conference, which equaled the Atlantic Coast Conference for the most teams in the 2009 NCAA field (eight each). Six of the Beavers wins have come by shutouts. OSU advanced to NCAA Second Round play with a 3-1 win Friday over Ohio State. Redshirt freshman Chelsea Buckland leads OSU in goals (7) and points (16). Senior midfielder Rachael Axon is an All-Pac 10 first-team selection. Sophomore defender Ashley Seal earned a spot on the honorable mention team. Head coach Linus Rhode led the Beavers to their first NCAA appearance since 1994 in only his second season.
Florida is 5-4 against teams in the 2009 tournament field. The Gators registered wins versus Auburn, Duke, Georgia and LSU. Florida split in its two meetings with South Carolina and lost at Mississippi and to No. 2 seeds Florida State and UCLA. Oregon State met 10 opponents that advanced to NCAA play during the 2009 season. OSU defeated Denver, Southern California and Washington. The Beavers lost to Portland, Stanford, California, UCLA, Washington State and Arizona State and tied San Diego State.
