Many questions come in each year about who set what record for the Gators in the 51-year old football series with FSU. Some of them are from former players who wonder if they still hold a mark they set.
In fact, several comments have come from former players. Yes, Jimmy Dunn (1958) and Jack Westbrook (1959) each scored two rushing touchdowns against the Seminoles. However, Fred Taylor ran for as many scores in 1997 as those two Gator stars of the 1950s combined.
In an effort to bring all interested parties up to date, here are several current UF record holders in this series which started in 1958:
Most Passing Yards: 443, Danny Wuerffel (1995)
Most Passing Attempts: 54, Larry (Dr. O) Ochab (1979)
Longest TD Pass: 82 yards, Kerwin Bell to Ricky Nattiel (1985)
Rushing Attempts: 31, Larry Dupree (1963)
Rushing Yards: 204, Jimmy DuBose (1975)
Rushing Touchdowns: 4, Fred Taylor (1997)
Most Receptions: 11, Reidel Anthony (1996)
Reception Yards: 193, Reidel Anthony (1996)
(It should be noted that Ike Hilliard gained 192 yards and Chris Doering 124 in the 1995 game.)
Most Touchdowns: 5, Tim Tebow, three passing, two rushing (2007)
Total Offense: 407 yards (443 passing, -36 rushing), Danny Wuerffel (1995)
Most Offensive Plays: 66, Shane Matthews, 48 passes, 18 rushes (1990)
Longest Field Goal: 54 yards, David Posey (1976)
Most Field Goals: 6, Bobby Raymond (1983)
Points Scored by Kicker: 23, Bobby Raymond with six field goals, five extra points (1983)
Longest Punt: 67 yards, Chas Henry (2008)
Florida's best efforts on defense in this series came in 1961 (minus 18 yards rushing), 1969 (101 yards of total offense) and 1972 (10 turnovers).
Offensively, the Gators rushed for 364 yards in 1973 and passed for 449 yards in the national championship victory in 1996. In 1982, the Gators had a pair of 100-yard rushers. Lorenzo Hampton ran for 138 yards and Neal Anderson added 103.
The “Iron Man Award” should go to quarterback Shane Matthews. In 1990, he threw 48 passes and ran 18 times against the Seminoles in Tallahassee.
