Florida Hosts FAMU on Tuesday for Fourth Game in Eight Days
Monday, November 30, 2009 | Women's Basketball
The University of Florida women's basketball team plays host to Florida A&M on Tuesday in the O'Connell Center beginning at 4:30 p.m. The game is the first half of a Gator basketball doubleheader, with the men's teams from the same schools tipping off following the women's game.
Fans wanting to attend either game of the doubleheader will need to purchase a full-priced ticket ($12 or $20) that will be good for both games. Women's Basketball Season Pass & Gator Gold Card holders will be issued a General Admission ticket to the men's game if they would like to stay. These tickets can be picked up inside the O'Connell Center at Gate 1, where each fan must present their Season Pass.
Fans can park in the O'Connell Center parking garage for free until halftime of the women's game; entrance to the O'Connell Center parking garage area will only be allowed off of SW 2nd Ave.
Tuesday's game will be the fourth in eight days for the Gators, as well as their third in five days.
In the three games leading up to Tuesday's contest against the Rattlers (3-2), UF converted 28-of-70 three-pointers, averaging 9.3 treys per game, while hitting them at a 40 percent effort. Sophomore Jordan Jones (Suwanee, Ga.) contributed 25 points in the win at FIU (Nov. 29), hitting 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and topping the career 500-point plateau during the game.
Florida A&M won its first three games of the season, highlighted by the season-opening upset at South Florida, 73-68 in overtime. The Rattlers have dropped their last two, but have come against talented teams in Missouri and Auburn.
“Florida A&M is very impressive and has gotten off to a great start this season,” UF head coach Amanda Butler said. “They've already had a big win on the road at South Florida which is impressive. They are a young, hungry team and we have to be ready to fight because we know that it would make their season to come to Florida and beat the Gators.”
The Gators lead the series against the Rattlers, 7-4, including a 5-0 record in games played in Gainesville. Florida carries a four-game win streak in the series into Tuesday's outing, with FAMU's last victory over the Gators coming on Feb. 10, 1986, in Tallahassee.
Jones leads Florida in scoring (14.3 ppg), assists (25), three-pointers (16) and steals (15), while senior Sharielle Smith (Bradenton, Fla.) collects a team-leading 7.8 rebounds along with 11.2 points per game. If Smith plays in Tuesday's game – which she is scheduled to do – it will be her 100th career appearance in a Gator uniform. She enters Tuesday's game with 696 career points and is the team's current active leader in both categories.
With the bulk (78.3%) of last year's top three-point shooters returning, the Gators seemingly are poised to make a run at last year's record-setting campaign from beyond the arc, where the 2008-09 squad hit 221 treys at a 35.0 percent accuracy mark.
Florida opened its 2009-10 campaign with a 7-for-18 performance from long range against Stetson, tied for the second-most treys in a season-opener. Entering Tuesday's game against Florida A&M, the Gators have dropped in 51 three-pointers for an average of 8.5 treys per game.
