UF Punter Chas Henry Earns SEC Special Teams Player of the Week
Monday, November 9, 2009 | Football
Gator junior punter Chas Henry (Dallas, Ga.) earned his first Southeastern Conference honor of the season Monday for his performance in UF's 27-3 victory over Vanderbilt. Henry's accolade marks the fourth time this season a Gator player has been named the Special Teams Player of the Week.
While the UF defense held Vanderbilt to just 199 yards total offense, Henry helped Florida in the field position battle, punting four times for 211 yards for a season-best average of 52.8 yards. Henry had three punts over 50 yards, including two of 58 yards, giving him six punts of 50+ yards on the season.
Henry and the Gators allowed the Commodores to an average starting field position of their own 23-yard line. Vanderbilt's six-yard punt return in the first quarter was the first return Florida has allowed through the first nine games in 2009. Additionally, the Gators have only allowed 13 punt return yards this season, which ranks second-best in the nation.
A 2009 Ray Guy Award candidate, Henry and the Gators will play their last SEC game of the season Nov. 14 in Columbia, S.C., against a 6-4 (3-4 SEC) South Carolina squad. Kick off is slated for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be carried by CBS.
