Florida Volleyball Notebook: Dec. 24
Thursday, December 24, 2009 | Volleyball
The talk around the Southeastern Conference volleyball world in 2009 has been the improvement of the talent level and competitiveness of the league as a whole.
The validity of those conversations was confirmed this week when the American Volleyball Coaches Association released its final top-25 poll and the NCAA announced the final RPI (ratings percentage index).
Four SEC teams finished in the AVCA's top 25 in 2009, marking the first time that has happened since the 1992 campaign. Kentucky (No. 12), Florida (No. 15), LSU (No. 19) and Tennessee (No. 24) all finished in the final top-25 poll. In total, the Gators faced seven of the nation's final top-25 squads over the course of a total of 10 matches during the season.
The SEC also placed four teams in the top 25 of the final RPI. Florida led the way with a No. 14 RPI, while LSU followed at 15, Tennessee at 17 and Kentucky at 21. The Gators defeated two teams this season who are ranked in the final top-25 of the RPI. Florida downed Florida State (No. 3 RPI) and Stanford (No. 8 RPI) during the 2009 campaign.
