Sunday, December 27, 2009 | Women's Basketball
The Gators return to the court for the first time since taking a short break for the holidays, playing host to Ohio on Monday beginning at 4:30 p.m., in the first-half of a Gator basketball doubleheader, with the Florida men entertaining American at 7 p.m.
Fans wanting to attend either game of the doubleheader will need to purchase a full-priced ticket ($12 or $20). A ticket is good for both games. Women's Basketball Season Pass & Gator Gold Card holders will be issued a General Admission ticket to the men's game if they would like to stay. These tickets can be picked up inside the O'Connell Center at Gate 1, where each fan must present their Season Pass.
Fans can park in the O'Connell Center parking garage for free until halftime of the women's game; entrance to the O'Connell Center parking garage area will only be allowed off of SW 2nd Ave.
Including Monday's contest, Florida has just two games remaining before the start of the Southeastern Conference slate. The Gators launch their league schedule on Sun., Jan. 3 against Arkansas in Fayetteville.
Florida has lost three of its last four games entering Monday's affair, while Ohio has dropped five consecutive. Both teams will play one more non-conference game following Monday's game, with the Gators playing host to Jacksonville on Wed., Dec. 30, and the Bobcats playing host to Colgate on Sat., Jan. 2.
Monday is the third of four doubleheaders the Gator Basketball teams will play this season. UF is a combined 3-1 in those double-days.
The Gators (5-6) and Bobcats (3-8) square off for the third time in program history, with Florida capturing both prior meetings. The teams played last year in Athens, with the Gators sinking 10 three-pointers en route to a 74-56 victory on Jan. 3. The only other meeting was back on Dec. 31, 1991, when Florida took the 85-66 decision, with current UF head coach Amanda Butler suiting up for the Gators as a sophomore.
Both head coaches in Monday's game are SEC alumnae, with UF's Amanda Butler now heading her alma mater and Ohio's Semeka Randall a 2000 graduate of Tennessee.
In Florida's last two games, sophomore Azania Stewart is averaging 13.0 points on 12-of-15 shooting for an 80.0 percent clip. Included in that average is her career-high 18 point effort in UF's win over Southern (Dec. 20). Sharielle Smith is contributing 9.5 points and 9.5 rebounds during the last two games, hitting 53.3 percent from the floor.
Sophomore Jordan Jones continues to lead the Gators' overall balanced offense, averaging 11.9 points along with 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Smith contributes 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, while Steffi Sorensen adds 8.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
