Gator swimming and diving fans will be able to watch a replay of the 2009 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships Monday, March 2, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Sun Sports, local channel 48. The broadcast will not only include tape-delayed coverage of swimming and diving action from the Feb. 18-21 SEC Championship meet, but interviews of various student-athletes, including Gators Bradley Ally (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), Clark Burckle (Louisville, Ky.) and SEC Female Swimmer of the Year, Gemma Spofforth (West Sussex, England).
In the four-day meet that came down to the very last relay, the No. 5 University of Florida women won their 17th SEC crown, the first since 2002, after edging out second-place finisher Auburn and third-place Georgia. The win for the Gators was the third-closest competition in SEC history, Florida with 744 points, Auburn with 730.5 and Georgia with 725. On the men's side, the No. 8 Gators claimed second place (626) at the 2009 league meet for the eighth-consecutive year to the men's team from Auburn (880.5).
On top of 10 UF SEC Championships, six for the women and four for the men, the Gators set one NCAA record, 16 UF records, nine James E. Martin Aquatics Center pool records, five SEC records and captured 23 NCAA automatic qualifying marks during their 2009 SEC Championship meet campaign.
While several Gators are competing at the Florida Swimming Senior Championships in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 26-March 1, as a last chance to qualify for the 2009 NCAA meet, both Florida squads will endure a training period before heading to NCAA competition.
Florida divers next hit the road for the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., March 13-15.
