Monday, February 9, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Sha Brooks (Jackson, Tenn.) led the University of Florida women's basketball team to wins over Alabama and No. 12/17 Tennessee and was recognized for her efforts as the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The senior guard scored 29 points against both the Crimson Tide and the Lady Vols, helping the Gators (22-2, 8-1) remain tied atop the SEC standings.
Brooks shot an efficient 48.7 percent from the floor and a stellar 64.3 percent from beyond the arc, hitting 9-of-14 during the two-game span, including a 6-of-9 performance on the road versus Alabama.
Against Tennessee, she scored all 12 points during a 12-0 Florida run, helping the Gators erase a seven-point deficit with 7:06 remaining and take a 55-52 lead with 3:19 to go and Florida never trailed again.
During the two games last week, Brooks moved up Florida's career chart in a handful of different stats, including No. 3 for steals (236) and No. 2 for games started (117).
Brooks, who had never been honored with the league's weekly award prior to this season, has now been recognized three times, also earning the nod on Dec. 23 and Nov. 24.
The Gators resume their challenging road trip this week, when they travel to play Vanderbilt in Nashville on Thursday, before facing LSU in Baton Rouge on Sunday. Both games will be televised, with the mid-week game airing on Sun Sports (in South Florida territory) and on FSN Florida (in North and Central Florida territories), while the Sunday contest airs live nationally on FSN.
Florida has compiled the best 24-game record in program history, while its current seven-game SEC win streak is the best run of its kind for the Gators.
