Softball's Nelson Earns SEC Weekly Honors
Tuesday, March 17, 2009 | Softball
No. 1/1 University of Florida softball senior pitcher Stacey Nelson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) was named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It marked the second time this season and the fifth time in her career Nelson was honored with the accolade.
The right hander went 3-0 last week, as the Gators shut out No. 8/7 Georgia and Ole Miss. On Sunday, Nelson pitched her first career no-hitter in the 4-0 win over Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. It was only the ninth time in program history the feat was accomplished. The Gator also broke into the NCAA's top-25 all-time wins leader board with 109 career victories.
Through 21.0 innings, Nelson gave up six hits and four walks, while striking out 21. She also tallied her 18th career one-hitter in the 15-0 defeat of Georgia on March 11. Nelson has now pitched nine shutouts this season and 47 in her career. The righty tallied 10 strike outs in the win over Ole Miss on March 14, which marked the third time this season she rung up at least 10 batters.
The All-American was honored earlier this March as a finalist of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. She also was named SEC Pitcher of the Week on March 2 as she went 4-0 with two shutouts and one save in five appearances. Nelson has earned the conference pitching award five times and an SEC weekly honor six times as she was the first in program history to be named SEC Freshman of the Week in 2006.
The Gators host FIU on Wednesday, March 18 in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. They return to SEC action with a three-game home series against No. 6/6 Tennessee beginning on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. (ET).
