Gators Embark on FSU Relays
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 | Track and Field
The University of Florida track and field squads head to Tallahassee, Fla., this weekend to participate in the 30th-annual Florida State Relays at Mike Long Track.
The three-day meet, which begins Thursday at 11 a.m., will be the first competition of the outdoor season for many of the Gators, after a small contingent of athletes from the women's team participated at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge last weekend. Participating teams at the FSU Relays include: Florida A&M, host Florida State, Jacksonville, Nicholls State, North Florida, South Florida, Syracuse and Troy. Live results will be available at www.halfmiletiming.com.
“We're excited about getting the full team outdoors this weekend as we open up at the FSU Relays,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “We have been training pretty well the last couple of weeks, so this will give us a good opportunity to see where we are as we move forward into the outdoor season. We're just looking for people to work hard and perform well.”
This will be the first appearance outdoors for members of the Florida's men's team, which finished second in the nation at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships two weeks ago in College Station, Texas. In total - between the men's and women's squads, the Gators notched 15 All-America honors at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
Last weekend at the Black and Gold Challenge, the Gators recorded four NCAA regional-qualifying marks, including Fidela James (shot put), Madison McNary (200m), Keely Medeiros (shot put) and Natalie Moser (pole vault).
Mike Long Track has served as home of the FSU track and field team for 53 years. The site of last year's NCAA East Regional, Mike Long Track was named after Florida State's first track and field head coach.
The University of Florida is home of the 2009 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. For all of the latest information on Gator Track and Field, log on to www.GatorZone.com.
