Brandon Spikes Named to Lott Trophy Watch List
Tuesday, April 7, 2009 | Football
Florida senior linebacker Brandon Spikes (Shelby, N.C.) has been named to The Lott Trophy Watch List, it was announced today by Ronnie Lott in Newport Beach, Ca.
Spikes, who earned All-American honors as a junior team captain in 2008, is one of 42 of the nation's top defensive players to be included on the Watch List for The Lott Trophy, which includes the top defensive players who have had the biggest IMPACT on their teams on and off the field. IMPACT stands for integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.
The Lott Trophy Watch List includes 14 repeat nominees including Spikes, who was a quarterfinalist for last year's award. Now in its sixth year, The Lott Trophy is the only college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and the personal character attributes of the player.
The Lott Trophy was awarded to Ohio State's James Laurinaitis in 2008 and has been previously won by Glenn Dorsey of LSU (2007), Daymeion Hughes of Cal (2006), DeMeco Ryans of Alabama (2005) and David Pollack of Georgia (2004).
The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation sponsors the award, contributing $25,000 to the general scholarship fund of the recipient's school. In five years, The Pacific Club Impact Foundation has donated nearly $650,000 to various charities, including the schools of the five previous winners of The Lott Trophy.
Voters for the award include selected members of the national media, previous finalists, the Board of Directors of The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, The IMPACT Foundation Board of Advisors comprised of many retired NFL players, and Legends Coaches, a distinguished group of former head college coaches.
The winner will be announced at a gala black-tie banquet at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Ca. on December 13, 2009.
