Seven Gators Named to SEC Swimming and Diving All-Freshman Teams

Seven Gators highlighted the 2009 SEC All-Freshman Swimming and Diving Teams, announced by the league office Thursday afternoon. Three UF freshmen women and four Florida newcomers on the men's side accumulated a total of 11 honors for their finishes at the 2009 SEC Championship meet in Auburn, Ala., Feb. 18-21. The two teams consist of the top finishing freshman in each event at the SEC meet, excluding relays.
Florida's Jeff Raymond (Davie, Fla.), a 2009 NCAA Championship qualifier, was the top freshman finisher in three events at the conference meet, including a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard free, seventh in the 500 free and eighth in the 200 fly. Raymond tied Georgia's Michael Arnold for three honors, the most of any school represented on the men's side.
Joining Raymond, Gators Robby Kennedy (Ft. Myers, Fla.), Brian Howell (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Colin Bell (Coral Springs, Fla.) were also top freshman finishers, Kennedy in the 200 breast (sixth), Howell in the 200-yard IM (11th) and Bell in the men's platform competition (11th).
On the women's side, both Jemma Lowe (Hartlepool, England) and Kirsten Smith (Cary, N.C.) accumulated two honors. Lowe took both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly titles, setting Florida records in each and capturing the SEC record in the 200 fly, while Smith finished third in the 400-yard IM and ninth in the 200-yard IM event.
Joining Lowe and Smith, Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.) finished second in the 200-yard back, helping Florida achieve a 1-2-3 sweep in the event, marking the highest freshman finisher in the field.
