Wednesday, May 6, 2009 | Men's Basketball
University of Florida men's basketball head coach Billy Donovan will be honored as a special guest at the fourth annual Dick Vitale Gala for cancer research at the Ritz Carlton in Sarasota on May 15.
Donovan will be joined by mentor and former head coach Rick Pitino as a fellow special guest.
“I'm very excited about the opportunity a part of this special event,” said Donovan. “Dick Vitale has done so much in terms of raising money for cancer research for the V Foundation and I'm honored to be a small part of this.”
The event, benefitting the V Foundation, has raised over $2.6 million for cancer research in its first three years, including $1.2 million at last year's event alone. The V Foundation is named after late North Carolina State head coach Jim Valvano, and has raised more than $80 million for cancer research since its inception in 1993.
Donovan will be introduced by UF football coach Urban Meyer, who will attend the event.
Previous special guests have included such coaching greats as Pat Summitt, Mike Krzyzewski, and Bobby Knight.
