On May 2, University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer received further recognition of his successes both on and off the field, as Florida Blue Key inducted him as an honorary member in the state's most prestigious leadership honorary.
Joining Meyer in this year's honorary tapping class were two other University Athletic Association officials, Mike Hill, the associate athletic director of external affairs, and Albert Matheny, the chair of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee and associate dean of student affairs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Each year Florida Blue Key chooses a select number of student and professional applicants for membership in the organization.
Every honorary applicant is considered by the organization's Honorary Tapping committee, comprised of students and alumni, who evaluate each nomination and then present their recommendations to the active chapter for approval.
Induction into Florida Blue Key signifies recognition of outstanding ability, leadership and service to the University of Florida and the state, and this tapping class boasted one of the more diverse classes yet.
“I am most proud for the recognition this brings to the student athletes that have comprised the University of Florida Gators Football Program for the past four years,” Meyer said. “I was extremely proud to be the Head Football Coach of the University of Florida Gators Football Team, the 2008 BCS National Champions. It was a tremendous honor, and it is a tremendous honor to be voted a member of Florida Blue Key.”
Other honorary members include the Chair of the Gator Legislative Caucus, Rep. Seth McKeel, the former CEO of Burger King, John Dasburg, and the former Director of Government Relations for Publix Super Markets Inc., Randy Roberts, who is the first member to be inducted posthumously.
“We are thrilled to welcome these individuals to a long standing fraternity of our state's most successful leaders," said Aron Weingard, Florida Blue Key's spring 2009 president. “The caliber and diversity within this tapping class exemplify the depth of this organization, uniting individuals from the legislative, professional, athletic and academic arenas of our state.”
