Gator Swimmer Clark Burckle Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America? Third-Team Honors
Wednesday, June 10, 2009 | Men's Swimming & Diving
University of Florida rising senior and nine-time All-American swimmer Clark Burckle (Louisville, Ky.) earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Third-Team honors, announced Wednesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Burckle joins six other Gators to earn Academic All-America honors during the 2008-09 academic year. Florida's seven Academic All-America selections in 2008-09 are second only to the nine that received Academic All-America honors during the 1995-96 season.
A 2008-09 CoSIDA Academic All-District III Men's At-Large First-Team honoree, Burckle advanced to the national ballot after posting a 3.56 cumulative GPA as a Food and Resource Economics major at Florida.
A two-time SEC Champion and 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier, Burckle will represent the United States at the World University Games when 26 of the nation's best swimmers head to Belgrade, Serbia, July 5-11, 2009, to compete in the swimming portion of the Games that extend from July 1-12, 2009. At the 2008 U.S. Open, Burckle walked away with two silver medals and recorded three career-best swims, resulting in his invitation to the WUG roster.
In addition to Burckle's Academic All-American accolades, junior Lady Gator swimmer and five-time NCAA backstroke champion Gemma Spofforth (West Sussex, England) also represented the UF swimming and Diving program in both the pool and classroom after earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Women's At-Large Second-Team honors. Spofforth was the first Florida female honored since 2005 when former Gator Vipa Bernhardt earned Academic All-District accolades.
To be nominated for Academic All-America honors, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career. No athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution.
