Softball's Nelson Named to USA National Team

University of Florida recent senior Stacey Nelson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) earned a spot on two USA Softball Women's National teams for the 2009 summer, the Amateur Softball Association of American (ASA) announced on Monday.
Nelson, who finished her career at Florida with 136 wins, will compete on the National team in July. The team will travel to Surrey, British Columbia, for the Canada Cup on July 3-12 and then to Oklahoma City, Okla., for the KFC World Cup presented by Six Flags on July 13-20.
The pitcher was also named to the 2009 USA Softball Japan Cup team that will compete at the Japan Cup in Sendai, Japan from July 31 to Aug. 2.
“We are so proud of Stacey,” Head coach Tim Walton said. “This is great recognition for her hard work. It's a great honor for her to represent her family, the University of Florida and the country in some of the premier softball venues in the world. We look forward to watching her succeed even more.”
Three other Southeastern Conference athletes were named to the national team as Chelsea Bramlett (Mississippi State), Ashley Holcombe (Alabama) and Brittany Rogers (Alabama) earned spots. Four other SEC softball players will make the trip to Japan with Nelson: Courtney Bures (Mississippi State), Molly Johnson (Kentucky), Rogers and Taylor Schlopy (Georgia). Only eight players from the 2008 Olympic team took spots on the 2009 rosters.
