Friday, June 26, 2009 | Track and Field
Freshman Florida decathlete Gray Horn (Wapakoneta, Ohio) sits in second place after the first five events of the junior men's decathlon and junior sprinter Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.) qualified for the semifinals of the men's 400-meter dash to highlight Gator athletes in competition on the opening day of the 2009 USA Track and Field Championships on Thursday at historic Hayward Field.
Horn currently sits in second place overall in the decathlon at USA Juniors with a total of 3,830. Horn's day was highlighted by a win in the long jump and a pair of runner-up finishes in the shot put and high jump.
Smith was second overall in the first round of the men's 400-meter dash in a time of 46.17 [46.167], while former Gator Kerron Clement was third overall in 46.17 [46.168]. Both advance to the semifinals of the event, which is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. EST Friday.
“I felt good tonight,” Smith said. “I got out of the blocks pretty well. I'm basically going to do the same thing tomorrow. I'm going to try to make it to the finals and go all out and try to make the team.”
Former Gator Hazel Clark finished second in the opening round of the women's 800-meter run in a time of 2:04.39 to advance to the semifinals of the event, which take place at 8:55 p.m. EST Friday.
“It felt good,” Clark said. “My goal was to get top-four. I was well-rested for this meet. I have trained hard and a lot differently this year, so hopefully it works out.”
Thrower Adam Montague (Townsville, Australia) finished sixth overall in the men's javelin with a toss of 239-7/73.04m.
The second day of the USA Track and Field Championships begins at 12 p.m. EST Friday from historic Hayward Field. Live results can be found at: http://www.usatf.org/events/2009/USAOutdoorTFChampionships/schedule.asp
