Six Gators Earn Preseason All-America Honors from Phil Steele
Six members of the University of Florida football team were selected to Phil Steele's 2009 Preseason All-American Teams, as announced by the publication on Tuesday. In addition, the Gators earned 16 spots on the preseason All-SEC Teams, including seven on the first team.
Senior quarterback Tim Tebow (Jacksonville, Fla.) was named first-team All-American and first-team All-SEC by the publication. Junior defensive end Carlos Dunlap (North Charleston, S.C.), junior cornerback Joe Haden (Ft. Washington, Md.) and senior linebacker Brandon Spikes (Shelby, N.C.) were also selected as preseason first-team All-Americans and All-SEC players.
Senior return specialist Brandon James (St. Augustine, Fla.) was selected as the preseason All-American first-team kick returner and fourth-team All-American punt returner. He was also selected first-team All-SEC punt returner and second-team All-SEC kick returner. Junior center Maurkice Pouncey (Lakeland, Fla.) was selected to the Preseason fourth team All-American Team, and first team All-SEC Team.
Junior safety Ahmad Black (Lakeland, Fla.) was selected to the preseason All-SEC first team while senior defensive end Jermaine Cunningham (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and junior punter Chas Henry (Dallas, Ga.) were named to the second team. Junior tight end Aaron Hernandez (Bristol, Conn.), junior guard Mike Pouncey (Lakeland, Fla.) and junior wide receiver Deonte Thompson (Belle Glade, Fla.) were second-team offensive selections.
Sophomore cornerback Janoris Jenkins (Pahokee, Fla.) was a third-team All-SEC defensive selection and junior safety Major Wright (Miramar, Fla.) was a fourth-team selection. Senior Riley Cooper (Clearwater, Fla.) was named a fourth-team wide receiver.
Florida's five first-team All-America selections were the most of any school in the nation. The seven Gators on the preseason All-SEC first team were the most of any school in the conference and their 16 selections overall were the highest in the league.
