All of the first-year members on the 2009 University of Florida's gymnastics team were named to the 2008-09 Southeastern Conference Freshman Academic Honor Roll, released Wednesday by league commissioner Mike Slive. Florida's four on the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll shared the highest total among the league's schools. The 2009 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2008-09 academic year.
Nicole Ellis, Amy Ferguson, Elizabeth Mahlich and Kailey Tissue earned spots on the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll. Ellis was one of two Gator freshmen student-athletes that turned in a 4.0 grade point average in their first year at UF. Earlier this year, Florida placed seven on the SEC Academic Honor Roll (Amanda Castillo, Courtney Gladys, Alicia Goodwin, Corey Hartung, Ashley Kerr, Maranda Smith and Rebekah Zaiser).
To be recognized to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
During the 2009 season, the Gators (10-6) finished fourth in the NCAA Championships, marking the fifth top-five finish for the program since 2004. Florida collected its fifth consecutive NCAA Regional team title in 2009 and took third at the SEC Championships. Five Gators collected nine All-America honors.
