14 Softball Players Named to SEC Academic Honor Roll
Thursday, July 2, 2009 | Softball
Fourteen members of the University of Florida softball team were named to the 2009 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. The total was the most in program history as 13 Gators made the roster in 2003.
The honor is the first for senior Danyell Hines (Bryan, Texas), sophomores Ami Austin (Ormond Beach, Fla.), Stephanie Brombacher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Kelsey Bruder (Corona, Calif.), Megan Bush (Anaheim Hills, Calif.), Tiffany DeFelice (Coral Springs, Fla.), Kristine Priebe (Moorpark, Calif.) and redshirt freshman Shaunice Harris (Moreno Valley, Calif.). Austin, Brombacher, Bush, DeFelice, Harris and Priebe earned SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll status last season.
Junior Francesca Enea (Woodland Hills, Calif.) was named to the list for the second time, along with senior Ali Gardiner (Waccabuc, N.Y.). The honor was the third for seniors Kristina Hilberth (Dunedin, Fla.), Brooke Johnson (Lakeland, Fla.), Stacey Nelson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and Kim Waleszonia (Fontana, Calif.). All four seniors were also named to the freshman honor roll to make it the fourth straight year they earned academic league honors.
“I am very proud of our student-athletes,” Head coach Tim Walton said. “We take a lot of pride in our academic achievements and I commend our players for their hard work in the classroom as well as on the field. We are so privileged to have a great support system in our Office of Student Life to help guide our student-athletes.”
In all, 71 Florida student-athletes earned academic honors. The 2008-09 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2008 Summer, Fall and 2009 Spring terms. To be recognized to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
For the 2008-09 academic year, a total of 168 UF student-athletes earned a spot on the league's academic honor roll. UF is the only SEC school to place 100 or more student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll each of the last 12 years. UF set its school record with 193 honorees in 2002-03. In the last 10 years, Florida leads the league with a total of 1,658 recipients.
