University of Florida golfer Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 109th North & South Amateur Championship on Thursday with a 2 and 1 win over Andrew Loupe in the third round. Alexander, the 16th seed in the 64 player field, will face No. 24 Patrick Rada on Friday at the famous Pinehurst No. 2 Course in North Carolina.
Alexander won the first hole to take the lead, but Loupe, who plays collegiately at LSU, won back-to-back holes on Nos. 4 and 5 to take a lead of his own. Alexander birdied the sixth hole to square the match, and never relinquished his lead. He clinched the match with a par on the 17th hole.
Alexander will tee off against Rada on Friday at 12:00. Live scoring will be available online at www.golfstat.com.
In the first round of match play, Alexander took down Tommy Parker without dropping a hole. He made birdies on No. 3, 5, 10 and 12 and played bogey-free to advance to the second round with a 7 and 6 win.
Alexander won his second round match 5 and 4 over Jacob Burger. Alexander took a lead on the first hole, but Burger evened the match on the third hole. Alexander bounced back and took a five-hole lead and held on for the win.
Fellow Gator Chappell Brown (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was also in the event, but failed to qualify for match play. Alexander earned an exemption into the match play portion of the event based on his amateur ranking.
